If untreated, the disease is usually portrayed as fatal, with death resulting from suffocation. It started when a 17-year-old girl named Yukiko saw a man named Takato refusing to accept one of her friends' love and gave it to someone else. When her friend died from the Hanahaki disease not long after he married the woman Akiko, he was shocked. What happens next?
